NOTD: Barielle "Decadence"

Every once and a while I seem to loose judgement when I buy a polish. I know that a lot of nailpolishlovers out there just craves green polishes. I'm not one of them. I love the colour green but just not on me. I love how it looks in the bottle but once it gets on my nails I get really uncomfortable. It's weird but I suppose I'll get used to it one day. I'll probably wake up one morning and realise that green is suddenly my colour. That's how my love for taupe colour started.

Anyway, this is Decadence from Barielle. So let's move on to the photos, shall we?

As you all can see, Decadence is a blueish green with a pretty pearl shimmer. I'm tempted to call it absinthe green beacuse of the name Decadence but that wouldn't be a fair description of the colour. Absinthe is a more pure, neutural green while this is, like I said, blueish green. It goes on smooth though and I'm sure that this is the standard 3 coats. I can't say if it stays on though beacuse I took it off after these photos were taken. But for any green-lover out there I'm sure that this is a must-have colour.

So what book do you recommend for a green polish that's called "Decadence"? Well, since my studies are now focused on Paris in the litterature, my mind is absorbed by the poetry of Baudelair. I'm not the person that usually likes poetry but there's something about Baudelaire I like. It can be the fact that he combines beauty with the macabre, just like Edgar Allen Poe did. And I've read the novels of Poe since I was about 9 I think. So, with this polish I recommend some dusty books written by either Baudelaire or Poe, curl up with a glass of absinthe (but don't drink it beacuse it tastes aweful!) and feel a bit "decadent".

We are not for sale! Vi är inte till salu!

This is going to be a bilingual entry since it's of such great importance. This follwing text is written by Swedish journalist Kicki Norman.

In English:
You probably don't know this, but if you're reading blogs you're most likely deluded. More and more bloggers recieves compensation to mention products in their blogs and therefor you can no longer trust the personal recommendations that once made the blogs so popular. "Bloggers" has become synonymous to walking advertisments, someone who does anything for an invite to parties with free wine, goodiebags stuffed with products from leading companies or just money.

Blogs are a fact. Close to 2,3 million Swedes reads one or several, blogs each day, depending on which survey you read. Most of them are women and blogreading is biggest in the younger age groups. Today one out of three women, in their 20's, has their own blog. Whoever tries to call blogs a fad has probably been hiding under a rock the last five years. Blogs today are a force to be reckon with.

The ones of us that blogs knows this. And we choose to handle our power in two different ways. One alarmingly big group, including the absolute biggest blogs in Sweden, does not only sell ads on their blogs, they sell the entries themselves. For a more or less handsome amount of money, depending on the size of the blog and it's direction, companies can get their products mentioned and pictures of it been shown. The prizetag can be thousands of Swedish krona. The biggest bloggers can make hundreds of thousands SEK within a month just by selling a combination of ads and blogentries. There are huge amount of money in circulation in a business that amounts to companies and the blogger gettting an advantage to the expense of their readers. The fact that this goes against marketinglaws doesn't stop it, no more than it stops the big bloggers in question to openly talk about how the money is being made.

Then there is a much smaller group, whose words and opinions are not for sale. We follow the press ethical rules, or marketing laws, or both. That means that we clearly make a distinct mark on what is an ad and our own written words. Even if an ad can be bought, the company doesn't have to give any kind of compensation for us to blog about it. We want to be credible to our readers and we think that integrity is important. We believe that our way to handle advertisers, editorial advertisment and existing laws is more important and a more long-termed lasting than selling your integrity and ultimatly fooling your readers.

Unfortunatly we are working against a great resistance. We often have to defend ourselves against incorrect accusations of being for sale ourselves, just beacuse other people are. Off course we show and talk about our publishing policy, but end up not being believed. Bloggcolleagues, with a more negotiable morale than ours, ends up shooting both themselves and us in the foot. Thanks to the blogliars ricochets we all end up one-legged.

So now we are all going to write clearly on our blogs that we follow the rules of professional conduct for Swedish journalists. We want to rise above all pressethical doubts. We want our readers to know where we stand. Since law and order isn't enough for this new group of young business women, who sells ads disguised as editorial material, we have to do something that distinguish us from our less particular blogcolleagues.

Every journy begins with one single step. This will hopefully be the first step to clean up this squalor of blogs. Beacuse even if some of our lesser particular blogcollagues sells themselves to the highest bidder, it doesn't mean that the rest of us are for sale.

Day 07 – Your best friend

Now this was a hard entry to write. It's why it's taken so bloody long. I don't have many friends, I think if I said just how many friends I had, and how my social life worked, people would be horrified. Beacuse today, friends are a sort of statussymbol. You collect friends on Facebook and followers on Twitter- it beacomes a hunt for popularity. Don't get me wrong though, this is not criticism towards those who has twitter- or Facebookaccounts- beacuse I have both and I get happy each time I get a new follower or a friend request.
Ok, I might be a little picky- I just don't accept every friend request I get. But enough about that. The topic for today was "my best friend". However, I want to make a little twist to it since I don't like to write about other people on my blog.

Do you think that a pet can be your best friend? Well, in a sense I think so. Animals are sensitive, just like us and just like with other people there is chemistry between you. At least if you take the time to notice it. I know this beacuse I've experienced it over and over. I lost a close friend, you could call her a "best friend" earlier this year. I still miss her deeply. I've never experienced such affection from anyone earlier. Well, here's a parade of my best friend Sess. I still miss you my sweetheart.

NOTD: H&M "Happy Grey"

Now here's the NOTD I promised you.

It's "Happy Grey" from the Swedish fashion chainstores H&M. This was unusually cheap- I think it was only 29 SEK which is about £2.5 and 4$ which isn't much at all. It's a creamy grey polish that actually doesn't get blue on my nails (which all the other greys I have do). I think there's a hint of green in it which dampens the blue tone. It's also has a descreet pearl shimmer in it which is impossible to capture with the camera. But it brings a depth to the colour which I love. The formula is perfection and it dries smoothly. I wore this polish for 5 days and the only thing the showed was a little tipwear. You can't get a better polish than that.

Normally I should have included a little tip on a good book but I'm too tired so I'm just going to give you a title: The picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. It's a great classic and I think that everyone that loves litterature should read it at least once.

Oh My God! I'm naked- again

A looong time ago- well, about a year and half ago- I posted a picture of my nails in the nude. Since a few of my favourite nailbloggers have posted pictures of their nails "in the nude" I'm going to jump on that trend and do that too. But first let me show you how they looked in March of 2009:

Look how long they were! OMG- I find that horrible now for some reason. It's strange how things can change in a year. But they are in good shape though. And now for the nails, as they are now. Well, before I painted them:

A bloody cold

Sorry people, but I've caught a cold so I won't be able to update the blog for at least a couple of days. I do have lots of NOTDs in store (one budgetpolish that stayed on my nails for 5 days without any obvious tear so stayed tuned for that!) and off course I'll continue the theme. I think the next one is "my best friend". If you miss me too much you can follow me on twitter since I can update from the sofa. It won't be anything intelligent though but it's something at least.

Day 06 – Your day

My day, uptil now (5:30 PM)- all the times are approximate:
9:00- Woke up by the alarm. Realised that it was almost dark outside still.

9:30- Sat by the computer. Checked out mail, Facebook, twitter and the blog. Found an award from Sublim among the comments which made me happy. Good start of the day.

10:05 Walked to Ylva with the hopes to get a warm cup of coffee since it was snowing outside- a whole lot!

13:15 Got back home again. Felt a need to read some of the litterature from the unicourse.

14:30 Read about Pippi Longstockings and thought about Annika's role as a girl in the books.

15:45 Started to go through my wishlist with nailpolishes and link to different NOTDs.

16:30 Mind numb after all the NOTD search. Went back to reading.

17:00 Realised I'm to tired to read.

17:00 Hungry.... can't focus on either writing or reading anymore....

Day 05 – Your definition of love

I guess my definition of love isn't all that complicated. Although love is a complex thing. There is the love for one's partner, the love for one's family or the love for a hobby or way of life. Love is multifaceted, you discover new aspects of it the more you turn it or ponder about it.
To me, love is off course my boyfriend. We've been together for two years now and even if it sounds totally cheesy he has really shown me what real love is. Boys has always been an issue with me- I've been shy and have had a hard time trusting someone. But D and I have something special going on. Even if we life in different countries it still feels like we're walking next to each other every day. I've never experienced a feeling like that- complete closeness, the feeling of never being alone. Love is when you can feel your partner's warm hand in yours when you're sitting on the cold bus early in the morning. Love is when you try to explain something on msn by drawing a stupid picture and realise that your partner has sketch the exact same picture.

Day 04 – What you ate today

Oh Jeeeesus- what I ate? I must have the worst eating habits in the world even though I've gotten better in the last 5 years. Ok, that might have been a little exaggerated, I'm sure that there are people out there that have worse eating habits than I do. I've just always had troubles with food. The problem is when you say that people always takes that as I'm either bulimic or anorectic. But that't not the case, I've just always had a problem with eating beacuse I don't like the feeling of putting food in my mouth and chew on it. If I think about what I do when I chew I loose my apetite. So it's important for me to eat things I like and that's the other problem- I've always been extremely picky with my food. I don't like spicy food, I would never eat special meats or meat that is undercooked. Just thinking about a steak tartare makes my apetite go out the window. But enough about my strange ideas- what did I eat today? Well, let's make it yesterday since it's only 2:51 pm now and I haven't eaten that much today. I don't think two sandwiches and leftover tuna/rice salad from yesterday qualifies. So here's my list:
Breakfast- 2 cups of coffee (I hardly ever eat breakfast when I'm not going to the University, since my stomach doesn't wake up until about 3 hours after my brain- and my brain wakes up 1 hour after I get up from the bed)
Lunch- Tuna and rice salad; rice, tuna (tinned in water), lettuce, avocado and feta cheese- yummy, even though it should have been tomatoes in it as well.
Dinner- my homemade västerbottencheese pie (a lovely swedish cheese from the north of Sweden, really strong flavour)
Oh, I didn't include all the cups of coffee or the one or two fruits that I had during the day. I'm the biggest coffee-oholic there is. I love coffee- it's the best invention since sliced bread.

NOTD: Eyeko Vintage Polish

Todays NOTD is mint green. Yes, I know- MINT GREEN! It's Eyeko's Vintage Polish, a mint or light jade green creme polish. I got it for free with a order I placed at Eyeko a few months ago. Eyeko is a budget brand, you can get it at the swedish webstore Eleven but then you'll have to pay about double the price for it. Another good thing about Eyeko is that you don't have to pay any postage cost within Europe. Oh and if you place an order there, use my special ambassador code E11884 at the checkout for a free gift! Let's move over to the pictures shall we:

I'm not sure how this works with my skintone to be honest- I think it brings out the redness. However it's a good polish. Especially for a budget polish like this is. It's cost 4 euros which is about 38 SEK. the brush is good but it can drip so be careful. It dries quickly and spreads evenly on the nail. It looks a bit uneven on the photos though but that's just a trick of the camera, it's really even in real life. I had on three coats in the photo. Overall I recommend Eyeko's polishes. I have a few of them and they all are great- I'm definatly buying more. I think my favourite is the taupe coloured "Posh". I give them an extra plus for the cute and original bottles.

So, what book can you recommend to a mint green nail polish? The colour is light and "easy", it's more spring than fall to be honest. If I had a "chic-lit" book in one of my bookshelves I would definatly choose that but since a girly book doesn't get over the threshold at home I'd had to choose something else. However, I found something that I thought would be suiting. It's Arthus Golden's Memoirs of a Geisha. It's the story of Sayuri and I suppose that it's a Cinderella story in a twisted way. Sayuri and her sister were sold as young girls to different okiya (a geisha house) as maids. Life there is hard for Sayuri, she is practically a slave. In time she does get proper geisha training and the reader takes part in the whole rituals of geishas which is fascinating. To call geishas prostitutes is a big misconseption. Yes, they do offer their companionships and sometimes that includes sex but there's still a big difference. I won't start a debate about the whole thing, I would just love to recommend this book.

NOTD: MAC "Seriously Hip"

Now this is truly an archive NOTD. I think I've had this over a year. Look how long my nails were! Anyway, this is the polish from the MAC Collection "Style black" that came out in.... was it in early 2010 or late 2009? This was a limited edition but you might find it on ebay or from private seller. But let's move on to the pictures:

The colour is a golden, mossy green with golden flakes and a pearl shine. The flakes are rather small and irregular, not the bigger flakes like you get in Nfu-Oh's lovely flake polishes. I think it was the regular 3 coats on this picture. I'm not sure what base- and top coat I was using though.
Normally this kind of green isn't my colour and to be totally honest, I've only used this once. I think the colour is beautiful, it's really fall like and the flakes makes it almost glow from within, but green just isn't my thing. I can't get it to suit me somehow. Although I don't think the  colour is my biggest issue with this polish. The flakes makes it almost impossible to remove. It doesn't matter how long you rub your nails with remover, you still get dark flakes on your nails. The formula is ok for a MAC polish- it's sticky but not too thick or gloopy. I can't remember how long I wore it before it chipped though. When it comes to MAC polishes they normal only stay on for a day or two which is an outrage considering how much they cost. But then again I'm the stupid one since I've bought them.

And now for the book tip! I wasn't sure what kind of book you should read to a greenish, fall like polish. Well, I found one- The serpent and the rainbow (1985) by Wade Davis. It's allegedly a non-fictional book but I would say I'm a bit skeptical when it comes to the degree of truth but it's still a good book. It's written by a Wade Davis, an etno-botanist who travels to Haiti to do some research about zombie poison. If you're interested in culture of Haiti and the mythos of zombies, I really recommend this beacuse it's truly interesting. It's also about the political climate in Haiti which was been troublesome to say the least. So it's not the typical Hollywood-zombie-story with moaning, slow walking humanlike creatures roaming the streets. It was filmed in 1988, starring Bill Pullman. But the movie is only loosely based on the book.

Day 03 – Your parents

Instead of writing a long entry about my parents, I will share a little scene that happend just the other day. It was on Sunday (Father's day in Sweden to be exact).
Me, my mum and dad where out on a sunday quizz walk in the freezing rain.
Mum: "Now that looks really good!" Points to the overgrown sidewalk.
Dad: With hesitation: "Oh? For real?"
Mum: Sighs loudly. "Come on. Do you really think so?"
Dad: Messes with the umbrella. "But you said so?"
Mum: "It was a JOKE!"
Me: Laughing myself silly.

The small illustration is quite pointless to any other person. But in my family, irony a joking has always been an everyday thing although, as you can see, irony doesn't always work.

NOTD: Rescue Beauty Lounge "Scrangie"

Now we finally come to a NOTD! Off course its from the archive beacuse the light has been horrible recently, a bad thing about winter. This time we have RBL's beautiful polish "Scrangie". This polish was especially made with one of my favourite nailpolish blogger- Scrangie. Now let's see the pictures:

The colour is a bright purple with green shimmer and microglitter. It's very unique although Zoya's Adina has almost the same concept- purple with a green duochrome. But they aren't dupes, even though I don't have Adina, I can tell by the pictures I've seen. The formula is excellent, like with all other RBL polishes. If you fancy it I can tell you that Nailmail has RBL as this months polish and Scrangie is included in one of the "Edgy" choice. It's truly recommended.

What sort of book can we mention after a beauty like Scrangie? Well, my thoughts are this; since Scrangie is inspired by beetlewings my thoughts straightly went to a longer novell I recently read. I think most people are somewhat familiar with The metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. Although that it's a misconception that the main character, Gregor Samsa, was transformed into a beetle. The "thing" he was transformed into is an unknown insect. Kafka didn't want the species of the insect to be specified which is actually a big charm with this long novell. The thing about Kafka is the uncertainty about what is going on. It's the surreal feeling. When Gregor Samsa wakes up and finds that his body now is an insect with multipel legs, his thoughts is not about what has happend but how he will get to work in the state he is. Somehow that highlights the nightmarish effect and it's all typical of Kafka. I recommend it.

The cats

Now when blogger finally lets me include photos again, I might as well show you the gruesome twosome- hahahaha. Brutus is on the left and the other one is Bina- both on my unmade bed.

Day 02 – Your first love

Now this is a difficult subject. Who was my first love? Hmmm..... but it must have been when I was around 7 I think. I've always liked hanging around blokes just as much as girls. Maybe it's beacuse I have an older brother and I'm used to have guys around. But the one that can be considered to be my first love was a bloke that was in the other first grade (or was it when we where in the second grade?). We were both at the same recreation centre after school and I think that's where we found each other. I won't mention his name though beacuse that's not fair.
Unfortunatly we were never boyfriend and girlfriend, but we were good friends. It was one of those sweet and innocent friendships where I felt my heart beat extra whenever we were together. I wasn't jelous when he had girlfriends though beacuse it never affected our friendship. Our friendship lasted until I moved with my family when I was 11. The funny thing is, when I think back, is that his and my friendship was located to that recreation centre. We didn't hang out at home or anything like that. After him I must have had about a billion different loves but it wasn't until I was 17 I got my first actual boyfriend.

Day 01 – Introduce yourself

Wow, this is going to be harder than I first expected. How do you decide on what is relevant and what you really want to let complete strangers know. Although, some of you readers that has left several comments (and some of you with blogs of your own) doesn't feel like complete strangers to me. So let's start, shall we.

I think the photo (captured with my crappy webcam) represents me really well- in front of the computer, with headphones on and, off course, with a wide smile on my face. Like most of you know, my name is Veronica and I turned 30 earlier this year. I live in a flat with my two cats, Brutus and Bina (I'll show you pictures of them further down, it's only fair) and about 50 plants of different kinds. Yes, apart from beauty products, I just love plants. I grow everything and I love to tend them- that is pure therapy. The japanese sure did know what they we're doing when they started their zen gardens. I was employed as a consultant at a company that went bankruped about 1½ years ago now. I didn't work there for long though but it was my first job and I was proud of it. When I was let go I resumed my studies and now I'm a fulltime student at Karlstad University. I'm currently studying litterature (and it's history) but after this term I'll probably start studying english since I'm going to get qualifications to apply for the translation programme (or courses) at Stockholm university. So, that means a big move for me which is scary but also very exciting. And it's a year away from now so I have time to get used to the idea.

I've been part of a swedish site devoted entirely to the author J.R.R. Tolkien (Swedens biggest Tolkien site actually!!) where I wrote articles for our weekly online magazine. We had our big time when Peter Jackson's movies where released but afterwards the site sort of lost more and more visitors and interest from the general public. And with that most of the interest to publish anymore magazines stopped which meant that no more articles where written (at least by me).

I'm a complete nerd when it comes to things that interest me. I seem to memorize everything which is sometime frustrating. You see, I can memorize every silly detail about Twin Peaks (apart from the number of Agent Cooper's hotel room) but any kind of math seem to pass straight through my head without leaving any kind of impression.

I've always been a lover of horror movies and horror stories. I can't remember how or why this strange lovestory started but it must have been something I was born with. I read my first Stephen King book (Pet sematary) when I was 9 or 10 and after that I was hooked on his book. It's actually a love that's still strong. When he was hit by a car in 1999 I was truly devastated. It sounds silly but I was. Even though King has written a lot of horror classics (and a lot of them have been turned into crappy movies), the works I consider to be his masterpieces is his series about the Dark Tower. If you haven't read them (I think it's about 10 books or so) then you definatly should beacuse they are amazing, truly amazing. I'm going to write a longer piece about the Dark towers series another day though. But Stephen King isn't my absolute favourite even though he has been my "companion" for the absolute longest. The author that's highest on my personal favourite list is Clive Barker, the man who created Hellraiser. He hasn't written as much as King has but his works has a deep quality and they appeal to the horrorlover in me. A female author I also love is Mo Hayder, an english woman who isn't so famous here in Sweden. She doesn't write horror though, they are more thrillers or detective stories, but they have a sense of horror in them. Especially her new series on "the walking man".

Another thing that's really typical of me is that I have a tendency to drift from the subject once I get started. But I have a feeling that you already know, don't you?

Oh, apparently blogger has something up it's... behind right now so I can't include a photo of the cats. But I will include them somewhere just as soon as blogger decides to cooperate.

A 30 day challenge

To kickstart the new language change I've implemented on the blog, I thought I might do a list that I've seen on two other blogs recently (Karin's and Katta's). I know that it isn't beauty related but it's a nice way for you, my lovely readers, to get to know me just a little bit better. So, here's the list of what sort of post you'll be reading here (amongst others off course):

Ny riktning?

Men iallafall...

Vinn foundation hos Lipglossbitch

Recension: La Roche Posay Toleraine

La roche posay toleriane soothing and protective skincare for normal to combination intolerant skin

Under extrema förhållanden: 5/5
Vanligtvis: 2/5

Hmmm- fotsvampskräm i ansiktet. Toppen.
